Transit Police and Crime Stoppers Partner On Text Tips To Solve Crime

The police world uses many acronyms, the latest addition could be TTTTP; Text Tip to Transit Police. At least that is what Transit Police and Crime Stoppers hope will take place more often.  Transit Users can now use their mobile device to send an anonymous Text Tip to Crime Stoppers using  “274637” and including the keyword “BCTIP”.

“We have thousands of potential deputies out there on public transit. The users of transit are our eyes and ears. Now they have another way of reaching out to us with information and concerns”, says Ward Clapham, Chief Officer of the Transit Police.

“This technology is cutting edge”, says Crime Stoppers Executive Director Tim Kelley. “We and the Transit Police believe it is a solid fit with many transit commuters who do a lot of text messaging.  Text tips are absolutely anonymous.  No names.  No IP addresses.  No testifying in court.  Send Crime Stoppers the anonymous information and it will get to the right investigators.”

Police remind people that in an emergency to always call 911. To anonymously report something suspicious or pass on a tip about a criminal occurrence, try the Text Tip line. A reward of up to $2000 may be available upon an arrest and charge.

TransLink communications Ken Hardie explains, “we are constantly exploring new ways to enhance the safety of transit users. This is another option we and Crime Stoppers offer them”.
