Safe Secure Transit Makes For Safer Communities

The public’s safety is a Transit Police priority: safe secure transit makes for safer communities.

Transit Police, when present and visible in and around transit stations adds to the safety and security of the wider neighbourhood and community, as a recent patrol check in Surrey demonstrates.

Uniformed Transit Police were conducting routine patrols in and around the Surrey Central Skytrain Station in the early morning hours of January 20th when officers observed a vehicle driving without any exterior lights. Officers conducted a traffic stop to alert the driver and got much more than they expected.

While approaching the vehicle, the Ford F-150 rolled backwards into their marked police car. Neither officer was injured, however the lone female occupant admitted that she had stolen the truck and was later found to be an unlicenced driver. She is now facing impaired driving and take auto without consent charges. The thirty year old female will appear in Surrey Provincial Court March 3 2010.

Although dedicated to the safety and security of the transit system, Transit Police can often be seen doing foot, bike and mobile patrols in the areas that directly surround transit stations.

“This type of patrol enhances the safety and security of the stations which in turn enhances the safety of the communities these stations are in . Safe Public Transit goes hand in hand with safe communities”, says Chief Officer Ward Clapham

“Public safety and security is our responsibility as it is with any police service”, reminds Chief Officer Ward Clapham, “whether it be on a street or on public transit”.
