Transit Police To Start Extra Patrols of Transit Lines After Closing

Transit Police will provide extra night patrols of transit facilities after the regular nightly system shutdown as part of the enhanced visibility and safety initiatives during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. These extra patrols are part of the Transit Police Service's work to ensure safety and security across all parts of the transit system. It is not in reaction to any specific threat but simply an extra effort at deterring any activity that might threaten the transit system

“This is something we have done before and may implement on a regular basis after the games”, explains Deputy Chief Beattie. “But during the games we now have the means to do so”.

In recent past some transit stations, trains and buildings have been the target of vandalism and damage. These extra patrols through out the early morning hours, until the system reopens and the day shift of Transit Police are on the system will help deter such activity.

Maintenance crews working on the lines at this time will also be there. They provide extra eyes and ears for the Transit Police. Officers on these patrols will have special equipment to assist them in the darkness. This not only makes the patrols more efficient but is an officer safety tool.

People are reminded to report suspicious activity on or around the transit systems to the Transit Police at 604 515 8300, if it is an emergency call 911.
